SOURCES FOR POTENTIAL COST RELIEF FOR MEDICINES

There are times when financial resources are not sufficient to pay for medications needed for treatment of mental illness.  There are opportunities in
the community for payment or receipt of medications.  The follow steps are offered as suggestions to pursue more or less in order.

Short-term or one-time solutions:
1.        Talk with your psychiatrist or family doctor.  Often they have samples provided by the drug companies.  The medical professionals also may
have suggestions about where to go for free or greatly reduced medications.

2.        Contact Urban Ministries on Downtown Blvd near downtown.  The Open Door Clinic is housed there. They can fill the prescription if you can
provide a copy of the prescription (signed by your physician) or provide the container showing that additional refills are available.

3.        Wake County Human Services has emergency funds for one time refills on medication.  You go to 220 Swinburne and apply for services at the
same room where one would apply for Medicaid.

4.        If you are already a Wake County Human Services client, contact your therapist and see if they have emergency medications that they can
provide you.

5.  check out these links:

and WRAL TV links to medication assistance: Click here

Longer-term solutions:
5.        Contact the manufacturer of the medications to see if the company has any programs for assistance.  Each individual drug company has
prescription assistance and you can either  go on the website for the drug and see what you would need to submit or you can go to:
www.needymeds.org.  This site has a link to the forms needed to apply for the Prescription Assistance Programs.  NeedyMeds
501(c)(3) non-profit with the mission of helping people who can't afford to pay for their medications.  Their website has useful information and a page
devoted to first time assistance.

6.        Contact Partnership for Prescription Assistance -- www.pparx.org
click here To determine if you qualify, (a) write down the names of the
medicines you take; (b) call toll-free 1-888-477-2669; and (c) a trained specialist will answer your questions and help you apply.

7.        Contact Together RX Access at 1-899-250-2839 or www.togetherrxaccess.com
click here.   You can apply for assistance by filling out a form,
assuming you meet the eligibility requirements which is income based and you do not have other prescription drug coverage.

The recommended approach would be to seek long-term assistance such as might be available through the contacts listed in items 5-7.  However,
these may take time to begin receipt of the medications, and so the suggestions in items 1-4 can help get you by until the longer term program kicks
in.  In addition, NAMI-Wake understands the difficulties and frustrations you are going through and we offer limited emergency assistance to people
with severe mental illness in need of medications.  To apply, contact Kathy Smith

Membership geographic area.
